After all it is a team that still retains its racist name, knows it and refuses to change it I guess for commercial and/or marketing reasons though neither exonerates its vulgarity. It is why I do and will refer to them as the Skins only.
LaVar Arrington a former Skin and in my opinion one of the best linebackers to ever play the game said it best, though I can't recall his exact words they were along the lines that the Skin's organization focuses more on the "flashy" things instead of winning football games. To me it's true because it seems as though the almighty dollar has taken away the pride of the game in the executive offices or very well with Dan Snyder himself which is sad to say since undoubtedly most of the players still retain it.
But whoever was in charge of the coaching staff set the Skins for failure the past two seasons. By experimenting or being radically spontaneous in getting a quarterback coach to become not the quarterback coach but "head coach" for the team. They did need a new coach but mind you they didn't get an assistant head coach as in an offensive or defensive coordinator but instead they got a quarterback coach who has only ever been a quarterback coach. Coach Zorn seemed to be more concerned about his pride but at the same time still trying to please the owner rather than winning games it's no wonder he seems to have lost both. Yet the decision was made and the mistake was made clear by two disastrous seasons so it's time to move on though for fans such as myself the memory has been deeply embedded.
Yet, the Skins problems went back further than an inexperienced coach. I mean in regards to the amount of player talent resulting in winning seasons. Coach Joe Gibbs had an eye for talent with acquisitions of Clinton Portis and Santana Moss and the drafting of Sean Taylor but that eye was blinded by pride when it came to the position he prided himself in most, which is arguably the most important position on the a team. Gibbs having brought in Mark Brunel who played petrified in the pocket which clearly showed and upon drafting Jason Campbell he treated him as if he never played in a game before always stating "he's not ready" which to has thrown his confidence which the most important attribute any athlete can possess. Though at one time the Skins had Sean Taylor,LaVar Arrington, Marcus Washington, Clinton Portis, Santana Moss, Chris Cooley, Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen all at the same time and with this squad went to the playoffs once.
Since, the Skins have been plagued by injuries and sorrowful losses and now only four of the previous mentioned remain. But other great players have been added as in pro-bowl linebacker London Fletcher though aging and of the most recent the drafting of promising defensive end turned outside linebacker Brian Orakpo. Though I believe Orakpo's impact would be far greater if he stayed at defensive end, but his stats did carry him to the pro-bowl his first year in the league.
So there is light at the end of the tunnel as multi-1,000 yard rusher Clinton Portis though injured for most of this past season now has ample time to recover and heal not only form this season but from the wear and tear of past season. Also there is a spark with the hiring of Mike Shanahan that not only fulfills the much needed head coaching position it also serves as a reunion of Shanahan and Portis as when both were in Denver Portis had his highest rushing yard seasons and the Broncos made the playoffs Portis's final year with them. So Portis and Shanahan can be described as being already in tuned. Mike Shanahan is an experienced head coach winning back to back Super Bowls in 1997 and 1998 with famed quarterback John Elway and a 2,000 yard season running back Terrell Davis. I say he could definitely restore Jason Campbell's confidence as well as the team's morale as a whole.
As the Skins do still possess Santana Moss one of the league's fastest players and top wide receiver's when his quarterback allows it and Chris Cooley who is perhaps the best "hands" tight end in the league next to Tony Gonzalez. They also have a defense that has always played exceptionally well despite their offense possessing most of its weapons. So I myself still look forward to a complete turnaround in their performance on the field in the future, I'll also look for a turnaround in the executive offices as well starting with a new team name.

ONE FOR THE ROAD

All’s well that ends…well at least there is an ending to the most nightmarish Redskins season in decades. If there is a light at the end of the tunnel it’s bound to be a train steam rolling right through the franchise. Sure Snyder secured an old Redskin faithful in Bruce Allen son of George. Unlike in his dad’s time 60 men together really can lose and lose in a humbling humiliating fashion. Redskins Park will most likely house a new group of 60 or 50 next season because many on the current rosters started packing their bags at the end of November.
I hope the younger Allen can help turn things around to lets say .500 football but it will be a daunting task. He did not exactly set the world on fire in Tampa Bay another team joining Washington on the NFL skid row. And then there is the matter of the mystery coach or coaches and no clue to whose behind center number one when it comes to a starting quarterback?
The season ends with a game against the Chargers a team that could possibly go to the Superbowl. I predicted a 4-12 finish for the boys in burgundy and so far I am looking prophetic. It would be nice if they proved me wrong but it is doubtful. Wait until next year, new team, new…coach and a new beginning to a forgettable season.

Jdon Howard

ALL SAINTS DAY

The New Orleans Saints marched onto Fed Ex field Sunday still hung over from their spectacular win over the New England Patriots last Monday night and immediately tripped over the Washington Redskins laying in wait. We can also add to this drama that the Saints are one of two still undefeated NFL teams and are predicted to go 16-0.

You had to see the game to believe what was happening—what happened, who were those guys in the burgundy who came out Sunday and punched the still drunk Saints in the mouth? Jason Campbell moved the offense down the field hitting his receivers, Cartwright ran right, ran left behind good blocking, it was amazing. Washington’s defense was nasty stuffing the run, blanketing the Saints receivers and totally frustrating Drew Brees. The Saints awoke from their stupor to make it a 17-17 game at halftime but against my better judgment I declared the Redskins victors in the third quarter and pondered how the Saints might rebound from a first loss. I guess it was the fact that the Skins were playing real team football and actually looked like a team that fooled me into believing they could win Sunday.

Ah, but when you’re very good luck will often follow and it followed the Saints to Landover. An untimely Jason Campbell pick stalled a drive that might have sealed the game in the third. What about that confounding Washington interception turned fumble tumbling into a Saints score—huh? No sweets for Suisham as he missed a chip shot that would have necessitated two New Orleans scores to win the game with time running out in regulation. Doom and gloom moved in quickly. Washington did not get any home cooking on the Seller’s fumble turning the ball over and giving New Orleans excellent field position.

In overtime the Saints looked like an undefeated team with multiple weapons gaining ground at will conflicted over winning the game via touchdown or field goal. They finally chose to win with a field goal and then danced back to Bourbon street undefeated string still intact. So far, so bad…I have only predicted one more win for Washington this season and I’ll stay with that forecast. I really believe the addition of Sherman Lewis and his play calling has added some zip to the Skins offense, for what it’s worth. Sunday’s barnburner on a cold winter day did expose the chink in Drew Brees’ armor. Teams capable of getting a descent pass rush through the Saints line can and will cause the talented QB to lose his cool, otherwise per his last name the New Orleans Brees’ through the rest of the season.

Jdon Howard

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLED

Redskins-Eagles the sequel opened with an on-side kick gaff, scooped up by Washington, first down Skins on the Philly 23.Washington has not scored a TD in 12 drives so maybe not a gaff so much. Cool shades on Zorn, Oakley’s? Four plays, Campbell fakes the hand off keeps it jogs in for the TD 7-0 Washington—wah? The Eagles mount an impressive drive but manage to make a mess out of that too mustering only 3 points, people boo, it’s Philly. The galloping ghost of the last Philly-Wash matchup Desean Jackson asserts himself catches a TD pass—wide open. But wait we stay in the game and score 14-10 Washington. Fox was a step slow on the coverage but I think they got a pep talk at the half. Washington trailed 14, to Philly’s 16. Again the Philadelphia story is “the best of times and the worst of times.”

Jason Campbell played some of the best football I’ve seen him play this year, maybe it’s more comfort with the play calling. But let’s face it; he’s booed at home, no fans on the road = no pressure. Yesterday he fully accepted the leadership role at quarterback and even though he missed on a couple of passes and threw two picks the statement was made win or lose I am the leader of the offense. Campbell’s performance yesterday could go a long way toward his future in the NFL. The defense gave up more real estate than usual Sunday. Washington had some more people out—Albert Haynesworth, absent, Laddell Betts, absent, Deangelo Hall, absent. Desean Jackson’s ghost galloped into London Fletcher’s territory in the second half—bam another player out with a concussion. Are shoulder pads being made out of titanium or Kevlar these days?

Philadelphia made the plays when they needed them getting the go ahead field goal with just under two minutes left. The last 1:48 of the game tested the mettle of the Redskins. The Redskins failed to mettle in four tries. 4th and 1 with the rush on Campbell holds it an instant too long debating flight or fright, or flight of the football…and the pass falls short, game over 27-24. Actually the pass fell and Jason Campbell got slammed into the turf face plant style. This probably should have been a penalty for roughing, a call you’re not going to get in Philly. When the games over and you’re still face down on the turf that’s keeping it real NFL 1978 Burt “Hurt Bones” Jones style. The Skins played pretty well on one leg with an arm tied behind the back, injuries, a lack of consistency and that oh so important play making factor keep them in the loser’s column.

Jdon Howard

RIVALS UNRAVELED

Boy, they sure don’t make division rivalry’s like the used to in 1974, 79, or 83 with Sonny Jurgensen, Larry Brown, Mark Mosley Drew Pearson, Roger Staubach, Riggo off tackle—games you could watch a thousand times. The 2009 edition of the Cowboys and Redskins set the rivalry back nearly 50 years. I hardly know the guys on either team with the exception of a few beleaguered over hyped position players. One team cannot play the game of football at all and the other team played so bad they barely secured the win after it was handed to them. They play a lot of good football down in Texas so Sunday’s Cowboy’s-Redskins exhibition was enough to fly the lone star at half-mast. Neither team scored until the second quarter, and the entire third quarter nearly went by without a score. The fans deserve better entertainment.

I had breakfast with a Dallas fan a week ago not by design but it was an amiable setting. I sure did not have anything to brag about, so I said to my new acquaintance, “the Cowboys just got a big win”; they need to push for a good run to the play-offs. Surprisingly my companion did not share in my positive projection and after Sunday I can see why. Realistically against quality competition these guys are drug store Cowboys not the real deal like Troy, and Emmet et al. The Cowboys are 7-3 because they won a few games they should have won. (Note to the Redskins)

And the Redskins…how can you make it into the Red Zone once against a team that goes two quarters without scoring at home. Dallas had already mailed it in—accepted their fate, se la vie. Defensively we got the job done. The offense lost the game Sunday. Those guys in the secondary formerly known as the “The Stooges” got the memo, no more after school backyard long bombs, and stuck to Dallas receivers like gum on the sole of a shoe.

Sunday’s game would have been better as a scrimmage where starters play two quarters max you empty the bench and when the gun sounds the score doesn’t matter because it was only a simulated contest, miss a field goal, so what, it’s like practice. Fans don’t have to pay to watch a scrimmage.

Remember you heard it here first; Dallas will barely make the Wild Card Playoffs and will finish the year 9-7—lame. Washington will win one more football game probably against Dallas or Oakland and will finish in the basement 4-12. Washington’s running on fumes so there’s no fire in the belly. It is too late for key injuries, so you’re without your best weapons. If we have Clinton Portis on Sunday maybe we win the game 9-6. Another blow to the Redskins midsection--Laddell Betts is out with a sprained MCL. He might as well rehab for next year. This is not your dad’s NFL where one horse can take you all the way to the roundup and thus it is totally unfair to saddle Rock Cartwright with the load of carrying the offense. Unless New Orleans, New York or San Diego play the Skins with their feet tied together, expect one more “W” on the year.

Jdon Howard

FAKE IT TIL YOU MAKE IT

Late morning Saturday I grumbled and sighed as I crept along in Beltway traffic. SUV’s with Virginia Tech Hokie banners surrounded me, destination College Park. I wondered aloud who would drive three to four hours to watch a lopsided contest between Tech and another beleaguered beltway loser the University of Maryland. Sunday, true fans and gluttons for punishment my brother and I waited for the 1pm kickoff. I remarked that I hoped the traffic would not snare me the same way on my return trip home. My brother’s reply, “the way the Redskins have been playing a lot of people will probably be on the road early.” Less than a couple minutes in the Skins were down 7-0. There’s a memo circulating around the NFL. Note to all quarterbacks: The Redskins cannot defend the bomb—go deep! Indeed with the continued yet puzzling Three Stooges play in the Washington secondary it seems anyone with an arm and minimum JV football experience can loft it over our heads for a score. I can only imagine that Denver’s huddle must have been an ode to the old backyard Nerf football games of my youth—“you block, everybody else go long on 2.”

Fortunately, the sun continued to shine at Fed Ex Field. “We’re driving the football” I exclaimed to my brother as Rock Cartwright and Ladell Betts ripped up good chunks of yardage. Lo and behold we got into the redzone and Jason Campbell executed the play action pass for a score! No sooner than I excused myself from the room and quickly returned we were behind again, the play, a Denver deep bomb, the victims—Moe, Larry, and Curly. But wait, there was trickery to cover the treachery, first confusion amongst the Redskins—shocker, and then the Broncos confused by the Redskins confusion and wait a minute it’s a fake punt! Hunter Smith hits Mike Sellers for a touchdown, it's 14-14. Way to go Zorn after all even a condemned man deserves a last request. Zorn and Sherman Lewis may want to empty the playbook of every misdirection, fake punt, double reverse, statue of liberty and tackle eligible play in existence. Physical play by the defense put Denver quarterback Kyle Orton out of the game before the half.

The third quarter was nothing to talk about but we controlled the fourth quarter. Ladell Betts played inspired football in place of injured Clinton Portis with tough north and south running that wore down the Denver D. I say go with the Betts/Cartright one two combo again next week until it fails. Washington scored more points in the fourth quarter than in a few previous games. Hail to the Redskins, hail victory, we won, we won! Leaving Maryland headed home Sunday evening there was more traffic, but it’s always a better ride when your team wins. Voice mail at Redskins Park Monday blared a single message—how bout them Cowboys!” Note to Deangelo Hall: play centerfield; don’t let those Nerf Football backyard tosses whistle over your head.

Jdon Howard

SMELLS LIKE TEAM SPIRIT

The Redskins have become as much of a story off the field as they have on since September. Last week Hall of fame and Redskin great John “Riggo” Riggins part of a Showtime NFL panel cited owner Daniel Snyder for having a “heart of darkness.” Cue the scary music and laughter, Mwwu-ha,ha,ha. Was Riggo channeling Vincent Price?

Seeing the Redskins owner on TV last week fielding questions from nameless—unseen fans I expected his head to spin around like Karen Valentine of 70s Exorcist fame. Snyder may or may not have a heart of darkness but he’s sure to have a stomach full of anti-acids after seeing his team drop to 2-6 on Sunday.

I watched with passive aggressive attention—intention? Lately I’ve found myself talking about other teams and games even in conversations with legitimate Redskins fans. Talk of the economy is easier than what’s happening to the burgundy and white. Hey, bring back the burgundy and gold it may change our fortune!

The Falcons stepped back on the winning track and stepped over the fallen Skins 31-17. I saw good signs of emotion and spirited play by several Washington players Sunday. The bad signs, key players are getting hurt every week. We’re walking and running wounded. Even the trainer’s appear to limp on and off the field. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are taping up before games. Players are getting into fights—with coaches on the other teams sideline. I’d be less surprised if a fight broke out on our own sideline. Unfortunately when things are desperate on the gridiron, injuries and flaring tempers often follow.

As former Redskin Doc Walker so astutely pointed out post-game, the only good thing about injuries is you get a fresh look at some other talent that very well might shape the future of the franchise. I’d dare say that following this season few will have jobs or want them around Ashburn Park. Next week, Dan Snyder participates in a séance in an effort to communicate with his dead franchise.

Jdon Howard

TIMEOUT

“Men, this is a football”, coaching legend Vince Lombardi chortled at the beginning of one of many memorable training camps. Such a painful jab might be thrown at the Washington Redskins who are in need of a remedial approach to football. With a bye week and a little time to rest it’s time to reflect and revamp. The best news following Monday Night’s debacle is that tight end Chris Cooley may be back next month in time to finish the season. Cooley’s a young strong guy and I have no doubt that he will heal up fine. I am most worried that the emotional bruising suffered by his teammates will not right itself in a similar fashion without counseling.

Clinton Portis, your athleticism and skills are plain to see. You are a gridiron warrior who plays with emotion and heart making it is difficult to watch you to suffer through such a lackluster team effort. To you I will simply throw out a name for you to meditate upon, Walter Payton. Many of you know Walter Payton as the NFL icon and rushing leader who played on the great Bears teams of the 1980’s under Mike Ditka. A few of us who grew up watching the NFL in the 1970s remember a spectacular younger Walter Payton who shouldered the load and team pride for subpar Chicago Bears teams.

The collisions Payton endured weekly were something akin to 1 on 11 gauntlets. NFL fans were dazzled by Payton’s prowess and power running, but dismayed by the punishment he suffered. Few thought his career would go beyond 1980. Absorbing jarring hits and Bears losses “Sweetness” continued to get better. Finally the powers that be finally surrounded their gem of a player with real football talent. That is when Walter Payton enjoyed division-conference wins and then a Super Bowl victory. Offensive line guru coach Joe Bugel had a cameo appearance last Monday night. It has to hurt Bugel that the offensive schemes are not helping Clinton Portis to Pro Bowl seasons. What’s wrong with building the offense around a willing warrior at running back? Even in 2009 a strong running game can still better facilitate a good passing game and good is as much as we can hope for at the quarterback position right now.

Jason Campbell, my words for you are “courage under fire.” From what I have seen you have a good arm but are lacking in composure. Stay in the pocket wait for your receivers to get open and then fire at the target. Redskin’s legend Doug Williams in his heyday launched rocket passes surrounded by a quartet of linebackers. Every quarterback in the 21st century NFL has to cope with speedier more athletic defensive personnel but more rules exist today protecting the quarterback. If you don’t have an open receiver then those guys need to run better routes and work harder to get open. And when you find yourself becoming a game day turf logo the line needs to do a better job of blocking. Lastly, whether it’s Campbell or Collins, be a leader. If you are doing your job everyone else has to fall in line because the offense begins at your position.

Defense, aside from allowing the big play at inopportune times, learn from your mistakes and keep ramping up the intensity. Defensive backs let’s have more communication in the secondary so that you’re not allowing easy touchdown’s. D line, “contain, contain, contain” and set the tone for the offense. Washington’s defense has played tough smash mouth football especially in the red zone. I think a few forced turnovers or interceptions could keep the Skins in a few close games down the road. First, get back to basics and then back into the win column.

Jdon Howard

Redskins Fandom 2009: An Exercise In Masochism

Sitting down on the couch for the requisite three hours of football viewing last night felt less like the beginning of a fun night and more like an invitation to an execution. I watched the game against the hated Philadelphia Eagles more out of a sense of obligation than any desire or excitement. As a Redskins fan in the year 2009, misery is my lot. And sure, there was a vague sense of hope running through the circuits of internet fandom over the last week--after all, Philly lost to the Raiders, perhaps the only team in the NFL whose organization is in a greater shambles than ours! We could do it, right? That's the truly insidious part of Redskins fandom, though. There's always a reason to hope. And it's always gonna get snatched away from us at the last second.

Or maybe at the first second. DeSean Jackson's 67 yard touchdown run came so early in the game that I was actually in the kitchen putting the finishing touches on a late dinner when it happened. I heard the TV making sounds of excitement from the living room, and ran in just in time to see ol' DeSean cross the goal line. I hadn't even sat down, and already it was looking like a long night. Jason Campbell's pick-six happened in the middle of dinner and was almost enough to snatch my appetite away, and then the combination of the strip-sack as soon as we got the ball back and Chris Cooley's injury on that same play--which I'm now hearing means he's out for the season, god say it ain't so--really killed the last tiny glimmer of hope in my heart.

But as I did so long ago, when trying to make it through the Spurrier years without slitting my wrists, I stayed until the bitter end. I can remember as a child being at my grandfather's house watching the Redskins with him, and he'd turn off the game with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter if it looked like the winner was set. I never understood that. I have a superstitious belief that the team won't do as well if I'm not watching, and that if I stick it out with them until the opposing quarterback is taking a knee to run out the clock, they might just pull something out of a hat and win the game in the final seconds. It's worked once or twice. Mostly it just lengthens the amount of time I spend suffering.

There were some worthwhile things gained through my choice to sit through the entire game last night, though. We're going to hear plenty about how screwed the Redskins are from a lot of other sources over the next two weeks, so I may as well focus on the good things, right? Well, if nothing else, our defense is still great. Sure, the Eagles scored 27 points, the most anyone has scored on us this year, but the defense only gave up two big plays in the process. The two DeSean Jackson touchdowns were scored outside the red zone--one of which, by the way, was a blast from the past in that it involved Carlos Rogers getting beat deep. 13 more Eagles points came off turnovers, and the defense wasn't even on the field for 7 of those. The other 6 came from Redskin fumbles within field goal range, both of which became field goals instead of touchdowns due to the defense doing their job. I would like to see our defense get more turnovers--that one fumble that landed at Chris Wilson's feet but was jumped on by an Eagles lineman first was heartbreaking--but right now, considering our overall status, defense is one thing I can't complain about.

Some of the stats that say good things about our defense, though, just make it clearer how bad our offense is right now. We had 21 first downs to their 11, 46 more yards in total offense than they did, and Jason Campbell passed for nearly 300 yards, with a 67% completion rate. So why couldn't we win the game? Well, as mentioned before--turnovers. Plenty of people will be pointing the finger at Jason Campbell here, but I for one am a Jason Campbell apologist, so I don't think that's necessarily deserved. His strip sack was obviously a case where he was trying to throw the ball away and got hit from behind by an Eagles player that should have been blocked and wasn't. His interception was tipped into the air. I could start talking about the offensive line here, but again, it's all been covered elsewhere. Everyone knows we're hurting where the offensive line is concerned. Let's move on.

More good stuff--Fred Davis finally stepped up and played a solid game of football. It's a year and a half into his career, so it's about time he started showing us why he got drafted so high. I hesitate to say this, as it seems like all sorts of jinx, but if he can play like this every week, we might be able to survive the loss of Cooley for the year. It was great to see him on a clutch third down reception, pushing and fighting against defenders to make it to the marker. He probably should be used as a slot receiver rather than as a tight end, though, because his blocking is even worse than that of our offensive line, which is saying a lot. God knows he'd be better than our current slot receiver, about whom the less said the better. Indirectly speaking, though, I will say that I was happy to see the team taking a chance with DeAngelo Hall as a punt returner. Using Santana Moss is less of a good move if you ask me, since he's our #1 receiver and having him get injured on a punt return would be a terrible thing. Other than his interception abilities, Hall isn't a star cornerback (yeah, I said it). Let him return punts, and we can get some use out of his speed with the ball in his hands.

I don't know what we're going to do about our running back situation, especially since Marcus Mason got cut, but I will say one more good thing about personnel: the decision to make Devin Thomas the starting #2 receiver was a good one, and one that should have been made from the beginning. Thomas has more talent than Kelly, he's proven that on the field not just this year but even last year to some extent, and like Fred Davis, he showed that talent by being willing to fight for yardage on the field last night. With him and Fred Davis on the field, I'm finally starting to feel like Campbell has more targets. I would like to see some passes called in third down and long situations that actually make it to the chains, but since our coaching staff seems reluctant to call for such things (regardless of whether it's Zorn or Lewis calling the plays), we may as well have receivers out there who know how to fight for the yardage we need.

But all of this vaguely happy, vaguely hopeful talk is just a halfhearted attempt to keep our spirits high, and we all know it. We have to keep telling ourselves that this week it might be different, that we might get some real joy out of sitting down to watch the Redskins play, instead of the existential horror that we've suffered through on so many Sundays in the past. Truth is, it seems more out of our reach than ever, and if a 2-5 record was all we could come up with during a creampuff-laden first half of the season, how well can we possibly expect to do when all of our remaining opponents (other than the aforementioned Raiders, of course) have winning records? I'm not expecting much, but I'll be there on the couch every week, waiting for it to be different this time.

--Andrew Necci

Eagles or Bust

A much anticipated game versus the Eagles turned out to be just as disappointing as the whole Redskins season. Clinton Portis throwing his helmet summed up the entire game. There is really nothing to explain: no offense, no defense, no special teams. A last ditch effort to salvage a season just turned into a horrible mess. I watched the highlights again, and it seems that if fumbles were touchdowns, the Skins would have won the game by 50 points.

Where does the team go from this losing season? If you look at the remaining schedule they might win one, at most two, more games if nothing changes. Either the Redskins need to start looking for a quarterback that fits the system perfectly and get a veteran coach; or just not show up for the rest of the season in hopes of getting a few good draft picks. For a professional football team to agonize over a single quarterback for five years is ridiculous. There are at least a hundred veterans - as well as college prospects - that could have a better chance. As far as Jim Zorn, it is unfortunate, but there are many good coaches eligible for a job. From the very beginning, he was not the right pick for a head coach. When a hall of fame coach like Joe Gibbs agrees to come back and sets up a perfect franchise, why change what worked? The Redskins need to finally realize that bringing in staff and players that are going to alter the entire team is never going to work. Provide someone that is going to adapt themselves to what is already there. The team is bruised and battered, and with a bye week coming up this is the perfect time to work on the 2010 season.

After this week's game to the Eagles, I almost do not even want to watch another Redskins game until something drastic happens. There is nothing to look forward to and the news from the team is stagnant. Even if Dan Snyder left his checkbook on the table as he has done in the past, nothing is going to revitalize this season. The Redskins future may be interesting and as a fan I am concerned about what is to come. Maybe someone will bring hope, until then I think I might focus on the start of the new basketball season.

-Chuck Brown

BLUE MONDAY OR CAMPBELL'S SOUP?

Call me crazy but I’ve been anticipating this game all week. There is a fever, a fire, a furor, surrounding Washington Redskins Football. Fire rhymes pretty well with Snyder what with all the “Fire Dan Snyder” T’s prevalent around Nova. Jim Zorn AKA “Wally Cleaver” is still the coach. Jason Campbell is back at quarterback and the coach who probably missed his calling, calling bingo, Sherman Lewis relayed offensive plays from the booth.

The Redskins are reeling going into “Monday Night” but what of the Philadelphia Eagles after an embarrassing loss to the pathetic Oakland Raiders? Pre-game the focus is on QB Donovan Mcnabb and running back Brian Westbrook. Virginia native Michael Vick surrounded by a firestorm of controversy has produced little fanfare and no fireworks with his on field play.

Washington Kicks off, Philadelphia opens in their wildcat offense. The cats were off and running. Three runs and one pass for a first down the Eagles score on an end around Desean Jackson 67 yard touchdown run. Defenses get burned on the end around once in a while—in high school. Where was the end? Jackson’s td scamper will be up for further review in the film room this week.

Skins turn: Jason Campbell, three and out. Scary moment, Eagles Brian Westbrook’s helmet connects with LB London Fletcher’s knee. Brother Byron Westbrook of the Redskins stands by. Who knew? Brian Westbrook left the game with a concussion. Of note, Washington loses Chris Cooley—ankle, ouch!

The Eagles punt and Washington’s pinned inside the ten yard line. Noo! Here my worst fears are confirmed as a Campbell pass is batted down into the arms of an Eagles defender who skirts into the end zone, 14-0 Eagles. Jason Campbell was batted down bodily six times limping noticeably. 2nd quarter Campbell is stripped from behind—fumbles. Eagles convert on a 47 yard field goal 17-0. Stripped, the whole Redskins team is having their pants pulled down on Monday Night.

Yet another Skins possession, Cartwright and Clinton Portis find their stride for good gains. Hey we’re in the red zone. Jason Campbell converts on a touchdown pass, yea! 17-7 Philly over Washington.

The defense holds, Eagles punt but normally sure handed Randal El muffs the punt! Philly football. The Skins D gets nasty but the Eagles still manage a field goal, 20-7 Eagles. Two minute warning: Mcnabb hits a wide open Desean Jackson after Jacksons’s smooth inside outside move confounds the Washington secondary, 27-7 Eagles.

Washington musters a field goal and at the half it’s 27-10. Phew! That was grueling, I feel beat up. Here’s a scenario—what do you say in the locker room if you’re coach Cleaver—err—Zorn? “What did we do wrong in the first half guys—everything?” “What can we improve on in the second half—everything?”

I was with the Skins in spirit the second half but have to admit I muted the sound in favor of the iPod. My third quarter analysis—3 and out. Fourth quarter Washington’s offense is passing the ball in desperation—surprise. 8 minutes to go the Skins are on the Eagles 4 and…bad snap, Campbell fumbles? Likely, poor Jason Campbell will be sacked next week in favor of Todd Collins. Last Skins possession two minutes remaining and nearly anonymous Santana Moss catches a pass on the 3. 2nd and goal Fred Davis catches a touchdown pass from Campbell, 27-17 Eagles. Mercifully Donovan Mcnabb kneels down the requisite number of times, this game is over. Are the Redskins over?

This was some of the worst football I have seen outside of an old episode of Eight is Enough. The Bradford clan got trounced by a group of smug frat boys. Dick Van Patten played quarterback in the loss. Least impressive, the entire Washington Redskins football team. Most impressive, the fans who despite the gloom and doom dressed out in their finest Redskin’s regalia and whooped it up about something? Greatest emotional content, Clinton Portis tossing his helmet in disgust. Believe it or not it’s about to get ugly. Peruse the next five game slate if you dare.

Jdon Howard

Game Six and a Big Loss to Another No Win Team

<span class="Apple-style-span" style=" border-collapse: collapse; As the Washington Redskins lose to another no-win team, many fans are asking the same questions that came about during the preseason. What are we going to do with Jim Zorn? What is going to happen with Jason Campbell? Will we ever score a touchdown? Neither coach nor quarterback seems to be losing a job this week, but what is it going to take for the Redskins to get it together?

Being a lifelong Redskins fan, this situation looks as if it is the same ol’ song and dance. In my opinion let us try to be on the up and up. There is no reason to get down, and a little optimism would not hurt at this point. I am going to look on the bright side and say the Redskins will pull a win out of their hat in a big way this week against the Eagles. This would bring the team to a positive going into their bye week. Having a 3-4 record would not mean the end of all playoff hopes, and maybe the new play caller is exactly what was needed.

Again as we move on, do not just get rid of your season tickets just yet. We still have a lot more football to be played. The most important thing that can be done is just put the past behind us and play on. Just last year the San Diego Charges went 8-8 and still made the playoffs, so do not throw in the towel just yet.

-Chuck Brown

Thorn, Torn, Zorn

Watching a quarterback coach ineffectively enhance quarterback play, seeing a 6-2 start translate into an 8-8 finish, and seeing two other rookie coaches (Harbaugh/Ravens, Smith/Falcons) lead their teams to the playoffs has Jim Zorn painted as the “goat” of the Washington Redskins. From well respected analyst and Redskin legends, to casual fans and fantasy football managers the consensus is the same, Jim Zorn is not producing enough points. To make matters worse there are five head coaches out of work right now who all have Super Bowl rings: Mike Shanahan (2), Bill Cowher (1), Tony Dungy (1), and John Gruden (1) Mike Holmgren (1).

When the Redskins announced Jim Zorn was the replacement for Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, I started to get that funny feeling in my stomach that this was a bad move. After growing up watching Redskin coaches including Norv Turner and Steve Spurrier, the term “Offensive Mastermind” no longer intrigued me. I was in the Greg Williams bandwagon at the time; I thought he had the players playing at a high level and chemistry and familiarity is vital for a successful franchise. Despite having huge shoes to fill Coach Jim Zorn had his Redskins playing at a high level in his first year. It seemed quarterback Jason Campbell had finally “got it”, running back Clinton Portis was on pace to break Redskin rushing records, and the defense had all the Greg Williams supporters momentarily humbled. The voice of opinion that was lost on not wanting Coach Zorn was changed into a cheer of victory, but it would only last half of a season.

The Redskins offense has failed to produce points consistently which has fans and former players wanting a change. Can you blame them? The 2009 Redskins have played six games this year and all their respective opponents were in last place. Jim Zorn has failed to revitalize the offense and it has Redskins nation looking for a change. Well, change has come in the form of Sherman Lewis. Jim Zorn’s play calling duties have been taken away from him. What will this do to a team midseason? The ramifications might be devastating. With the NFC East looking all but normal this past weekend, the Redskins season is far from over. Is Sherman Lewis really the answer? That question won’t be answered until game time.

We have seen Coach Zorn as the thorn in the side of Skins fans, and then torn from the duties he was hired for, and now we will see who Jim Zorn really is. Taking the responsibilities away from the head coach can be a humbling experience. It will be interesting to see how Coach Zorn reacts to having a new role as a coach. He now might be able to focus on the thing he does best, teaching. Jim Zorn was formerly a QB coach in Seattle and helped develop a Super Bowl quarterback in Matt Hasselbeck. There is no Super Bowl in the Redskins immediate future, but I like the character shown by Jim Zorn. Despite being ripped by everyone from legends to my mother, Jim Zorn has a mind for the game and can be a useful resource, but as a head coach he might need some more time.

Brandon Jarman

S.O.S

In the words of Casey Stengal, “you didn’t mind missing a play because you knew something bad was happening anyway”. Now facing an uphill deficit of 2 and 4 the woeful Redskins appear to find better ways to lose every week. Counting thirty-six years as a fan I cannot say when I’ve seen this Washington organization in such desperate straits. On paper the Skins have as much talent as any other burgundy and gold play-off team of the past. So what’s the problem? Let’s start at the top. Mr. Snyder your tower of wealth is not tall enough to repel stones thrown by the Redskin faithful. Snyder’s resume: All the money, all the wrong moves, marquee league talent that never produced and college prospects gone bust or had their talent wasted—Champ Bailey future hall of famer—hello! Perhaps Dan Snyder thought he could rub one of those Superbowl trophies and produce another championship team like—magic!
Forlorn Jim Zorn, a pretty good quarter back in the mysterious 70’s Seahawk green who threw touchdowns to Steve Largent. Those Seahawk teams were good but never good enough and I am afraid this legacy looms for Zorn in coaching. Who did Zorn coach under, and what system did he bring with him to Washington? Still the game is played on the field and the players have to play well. Here’s the thing, these guys don’t know how to win. The tradition of winning in Washington retired with Darrell Green. Under miserly sports legend Jack Kent Cooke they were never going to be the highest paid, and thanks in part to cheerleader/Coach George Allen the team forfeited drafting any top college prospects for years. Cooke knew sports and hired coaches and staff familiar with building competitive teams and upholding the Washington Redskins spirited tradition. The two go together otherwise no smurfs, no fun bunch, no hogs, no Riggo and no reason for the band to strike up “hail to the Redskins.”

Jdon Howard

2009/10 Predictions

Written by: Tony Martin

Well, there are only 81 days until the first pre season game, and boy, I can't wait. As a fan of a team that hasn't won a championship in over 17 years and has only been in the playoffs 4 times since then, I find myself always saying, "This is the year", and making predictions of a 13-3 record, but it hasn't happened yet. The best record the Redskins have posted in a season since their 14-2 season in 1991 is 10-6, which they have done only twice.

This season will start with uncertainty at both the Quarterback position and the Head Coaching job, not for 2009, but for 2010. This is the last year of Jason Campbell's contract, and with the trade proposal for Jay Cutler that didn't happen, the rumors of Mark Sanchez being the guy management wanted, what are the odds that Campbell would want to return for the 2010 season?

Coach Jim Zorn is most likely in his last season as head coach of the Redskins. With Campbell leading the team to a great season, it won't be enough to save Zorn's job with the likes of Mike Shannahan, Gruden and even possibly Bill Cower available. There have been 6 Head Coaches since Snyder has taken ownership, and that includes 4 years of Gibbs part II. It seems that he gets bored rather quickly.

Prediction 1: Jason Campbell throws for over 3,800 yards, 25 Touchdowns and leads the Redskins to their best season in 18 years. Following his breakout season, he signs a big money deal somewhere other than Washington.

Prediction 2: Coach Zorn will have a winning record and make the post season, but he will not return in 2010, due to the fact that Mr. Snyder's ego will need to have the big name coach that will temporarily fulfill his needs, ie. Marty Schottenheimer.

Prediction 3: Redskins go 13-3 in 2009, having home field advantage throughout the playoffs, winning the NFC crown, and going on to win Super Bowl XLIV, defeating Norv Turner's Chargers, in a lop sided victory.
